What is Diversity and Inclusion (D&I)?

Diversity is any dimension that can be used to differentiate groups and people.

It’s about empowering people by respecting and appreciating what makes them different, in terms of age, gender, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, education, and national origin.

Diversity allows for the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment. It means understanding one another by surpassing simple tolerance to ensure people truly value their differences.

Inclusion is appreciating our differences. It’s an effort in which different groups or individuals with different backgrounds are culturally and socially accepted and welcomed.

One of our clients eloquently described diversity and inclusion as “first and foremost a leadership task” stipulating that ‘diversity without inclusion is worthless!’

Inclusion strategist Vernā Myers puts it in simple terms: ‘Diversity is being invited to the party, inclusion is being asked to dance.

Why Diversity and Inclusion?

Organizations need to allocate the required resources and training to attract the right employees with the best minds and skills. In today’s quest for talent, this may require looking beyond the traditional work pool, hence the diversity in the workplace

Globalization has led to a demographic shift with increased mobility in migrant workers traveling across the world for career progression and to meet the need for a talented and skilled workforce. This is what is driving diversity.

A diverse workforce provides social harmony at work for employees. It increases productivity and profitability, which in turn helps organizations to succeed in the global marketplace.

According to the 2020 McKinsey study Diversity Wins – How Inclusion Matters  , diverse teams are more successful and increase employee satisfaction. As an example, ‘companies are 25% more likely to be successful than average if they have women in top management.’
